We started our morning with a special Ash Wednesday chapel with the whole school. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent. Lent is a time before Easter that we remember all of the pain and suffering Jesus went through for us! We also reflect on our own shortcomings and repent. Jesus loves us so much that He went through all of the pain and suffering for us!
After chapel, we had free choice time in the classroom.
Our writing skills continue to improve through meaningful writing practice as we make cards, letters, and various creations!
Bryson worked hard in the blocks to problem solve how to get his structure to stay standing. Problem solving and persistence are two important life skills!
During small group time, we played a knight counting game in partners. This goal of this activity is twofold: to increase our counting skills and number recognition and also to increase our ability to work together to accomplish a goal. Both skills are extremely important!
We also learned about the various symbols on a shield! We worked with Ms. Emma to create our own individual shield using the various symbols.
We had fun decorating crowns with jewels too!
We dictated what we would do if we were a knight. This gives us another insight to the children's view of and experience with knights and helps us learn how to best extend those views and experiences.
We then watched a short video about knights! After the video, the children wanted to set up a tournament for us to act out. We discussed the various things that we would need and where the tournament could take place. I believe this idea will serve as our culminating event when we are done with the castle project in a few weeks!
During free choice play, the children extended their knowledge about castles, the roles within the castle, and creatively expressed both!
Dressmaker Sammie hard at work!
Megan was a dragon and Avery bravely saved the classroom!
Many friends worked to make their own armor and horse!
Some friends set up a tournament with the miniature knights.
Sammie waved the flag to begin the games!
Zack and Delaney danced together at the castle ball.
Megan made flags for our tournament!
Inside the castle the queen and princess took a rest.
Waving the flags
Our horses and hats continued to become more creative and in-depth as we continued to play. As the children delve deeper into their play, and create props to extend their play, they are developing cognitive skills!
