Our friends quickly became engaged in the catapults this morning! The catapults provide a great way to engage in mathematical reasoning as well as science and discovery!
Working together
Many of the friends worked together to write labels for various things. They used the first letter of the word to represent the word. This shows that the children not only understand the important connection between spoken word and written print, but they are also beginning to sound out words independently!
"This S sign is for SNOW"
We had chapel in the commons today!
I led chapel today, and we began our chapel time with a praise song entitled, "Saved by Grace."
During chapel we learned that sometimes we are all scared, but the bible tells us that we don't have to be afraid! Jesus is with us all of the time! We also learned that He is not only with us, but He loves us very much! He loves us so much that He died on the cross and rose again to save us from our sins!
We learned this poem to help us remember that!
"Jesus is with me wherever I go.
I read the bible, and that's how I know."
During small group time, we expressed creativity as we drew pictures on the SMARTboard.
We also tested the catapults independently. The children shared their observations with one another.
"The small cotton ball goes higher."
"The yellow catapult shoots far!"
"If you hold it up, it will hit the castle!"
We painted with black watercolor. This allows an opportunity to gain fine motor control and express creativity!
Each group worked with me to test the catapults. One of the friends shot the catapult. One of the friends measured how far the cotton ball went. Another friend recorded the measurement. We are learning so much through this activity! We are learning to take turns, practice recognizing and writing numbers, practice measuring, and practice working together. We will do this again with our big catapult on Friday!
During second free choice, we had a few tournaments in our classroom!
"KNIGHTS! PARADE YOUR COLORS!"
Some friends built towers and used the catapults to shoot off various classroom items to try to knock the tower over. We learned so much through this child-initiated experiment!
We learned:
The cotton balls do not knock towers over.
The real wood pieces are too big for the catapults.
The animals work really well to knock over towers!
One of the friends drew a picture of a knight on a horse on the SAMRTboard.
Block creations
Some of the friends worked to measure various classroom items. They wrote down the name of the items and its measurement. This was a great opportunity to engage in meaningful writing practice, number recognition, and measuring.
Victoria worked hard to create a helmet that would protect her face just like the knights we saw on the videos and we see in our books!
Mr. M, our Assistant Principal, came in our classroom for a tournament!
Castle play
The friends continued to write labels for various classroom items. Look how our literacy skills are growing!
