This morning many of our friends enjoyed playing school!

Other friends wanted to begin the tournament, so they created a sign in sheet.

Some friends created in the blocks and lincoln logs! As you know by now, working in the blocks helps children practice problem solving, persistence, and spatial reasoning as well as many other foundational math skills!

Some of the friends played sleepy kitties in the castle.

During morning meeting, we watched a short video of a knight tournament.  We observed things that we will need for our tournament!  We will make a list of these things and begin creating them in the coming days.

We also played a fun game called Wiggle Worm!  This game helps us practice recognizing letters, numbers, and shapes while allowing a chance to wiggle!

The friends took turns attending a gymnastics class in the commons this morning!  They were very excited and had a lot of fun!!

During second free choice time, some of the friends worked together to create a balance out of the tubes!  The friends tested the balance with various classroom items and tested to see if they were equal!  They are learning valuable science, math, and inquiry skills as well as persistence!

We then used the ramps to test and see which ramp would help the cars go the farthest.

I listened to two of the friends talking.  They are helping each other predict and explain their prediction!  Just as important, they are fostering an intrinsic motivation to learn!

Friend One:  "So if we put this car here, what do you think will happen?"
Friend Two: "Well I think it will be shorter than the other ramp."
Friend One: "Let's test and see!"

Sammie made labels for the various areas to help identify which places were safe to walk and which were full of water!

Many of the other friends joined in the label making!  This was a great opportunity to engage in meaningful writing practice, letter and sound correlation, and sounding out words!

We used the fabric we have to make clothes like the knights have in the video that we saw!

The friends used the scraps to make flags, just like in the video!

"Knights!  Show your colors!"

"Let the tournament begin!"

King and queen in the castle.  We had a discussion about which throne was for the king and which was for the queen.  The children's literacy skills helped with the discussion!

Friend One: "See the label with a K?  K is for King."
Friend Two: "Oh yeah!  I see that."
Friend One:  "The label with a Q is for the Queen."

Signing up for the tournament provides another opportunity to engage in meaningful writing practice!

The queen visited the tournaments too!

Creating in the writing and art center

During small group time we played a game on the SMARTboard that allowed us to practice recognizing letters and their sounds!

We also painted on wax paper!

When we webbed what we knew about knights and what we wanted to know about knights, some friends had questions about catapults.  We used this student interest to guide our learning!  We worked in groups to make small catapults. We will test the catapults later in the week as well as make a large catapult as a class!

During Jesus time, we learned the story of the Widow's Mite found in Like 21:1-4.  We learned that sometimes we don't want to give our time, talents, and/or  money to Jesus.  We learned that Jesus gives us the riches of heaven: the best gift ever!  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can willingly give our time, talents, and money to Jesus trusting that we have all that we need!
