Happy Friday!

Don't forget that our class will be singing on Saturday, February 28th here at Zion at the 5:00 service.
This morning the children were very excited to start training for a tournament during our free choice play.  We brainstormed some ground rules for the tournament together.

We decided:
Only two friends could be in the tournament at a time.
We could only tap swords or shields.  (Tap not hit)
The friends on the sidelines cheer on the knights in the tournament.

This play is a great opportunity to practice self-regulation.  Self-regulation is a large part of executive functioning which includes: working memory, impulse control, and set shifting.  Such skills will benefit children not only throughout the schooling careers, but also throughout their lives!

Our class also engages in block play daily.  Block play provides an opportunity to learn valuable social skills including cooperation, collaboration, and problem solving.  Block play also allows children to engage in mathematical development (size, shape, numeration) and language development (taller, shorter, etc.)

Commons play

During morning meeting we played number games to help us count and deepen our understanding of one to one correspondence.  We added physical movements to increase the cognitive action and help us retain what we learned!

During small group time we wrote all of the rules we thought of for our classroom tournaments.

The children worked to write the words.  Each child is unique, so therefore success for each child is unique.  Success for some children is sounding out the word independently.  Success for some children is writing each letter independently.  Success for some children is using a correct pencil grip.  Success for some children is looking at the letter that needs to be written and copying it.

Look at our hard work!  The children's handwriting continues to become stronger!

We played a castle game with Mrs. Emma today too!   As we played the game, we practiced quantifying the dots on the dice! (Quantifying means to look at four dots and see that there are four dots without needing to count them.)

We also practiced writing words in our journals!  The children showed each other the words that they wrote in their journals, and many of the children were able to identify the word because of their familiarity with the word.  This is a valuable pre-reading skill!

During second free choice time, many children wanted to do the tournament.  We problem solved together to decide how to know who goes in the tournament next.  We decided that a sign up sheet was a great way to solve this problem!  This sign up sheet provides so many learning opportunities!  It is a great way to encourage meaningful writing practice.  It also is a great way to practice number recognition!  ("Knight 3 and 4 on the sign up sheet are next!  Who signed up as knight 3 and 4?")  It also helped the children learn valuable problem solving skills!

Learning as we play in the blocks!

Engaging in meaningful writing practice in the art center

Acting out what we have learned about castles so far

We then went to Mrs. Beaty's 8th grade classroom for a fun project!

We started our time together by singing "If You're Happy and You Know It"

During Jesus time, we re-told the story of the Good Samaritan.  We discussed ways that we can show God's love to each other like the Good Samaritan did.  We thanked God for forgiving us when we forget to show His love.  We also thanked God for the greatest showing of love: sending His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and rise again to save us from our sins!
