Today we celebrate Maddie! We are so thankful that God brought Maddie to our class!
Happy Birthday Maddie!!
This morning during free choice time, we had a lot of fun engaging in castle play!
Playing is an important part of the learning process! As the children play, we use their questions and interests to guide our learning.
Pastor Hohener from chapel of the cross led our chapel this morning! He brought special items in to show us: a shovel, a book, a card, a paper towel, and a stuffed animal. We discussed what al of those things have in common. We learned that we can use all of those things to show God's love! He read to us an important verse from the bible- John 3:16! I encourage you to read this bible verse at home with your child tonight.
For small group time, we had a special guest visitor: Mr. Dersch! Mr. Dersch is an engineer, and he has a lot of experience making blueprints!
Thank you so much Mr. Dersch for helping in our class today!
We used the iPads to document some of what Mr. Dersch shared with us!
Mr. Dersch showed us some of the tools he uses to make blueprints. We decided that we could bring some similar tools into our writing center!
During second free choice time, Mr. Dersch stayed and helped to problem solve about the drawbridge for our castle.
We used extra slats from blinds and worked to weave together a gate for the castle.
We problem solved together how to best attach the gate to the castle.
I encouraged the children to think through what they are going to do before doing it. Learning this process increases cognitive development!
The children's castle play continues to mature and deepen. Today while playing the children began assigning roles. This is a sign of mature play!
"You are the royal dressmaker."
"You are the laundry cleaner."
"I am the bed maker."
(You will notice that the children continued to document our play using the iPads.)
Violet and Julia made invitations to the castle! They engaged in meaningful writing practice!
Bryson and Zack worked collaboratively completing puzzles for several minutes. This is a social skill that will benefit them throughout their lives!
Isaac made some cards for Sammie.
They worked together to read the cards that he created. This is another way to incorporate reading and writing skills into natural play. By doing so, the skills learned are more meaningful and therefore make a bigger impact.
Hunter had an idea to make a bow and arrow using one of the slats. He thought through his plan, and worked hard.
When a giant bombarded the castle, Knight Hunter protected the castle and everyone inside.
Other friends were inspired to make bows and arrows too. (We made some rules about when and where to use the bows and arrows in order to keep everyone safe.)
