Happy Monday!
Our morning started with a few tournaments! The children are doing a great job remembering the moves we have learned and using self-regulation to ensure that the moves we learned are the only ones used.
Self regulation is an important skill in early childhood education. It is also a part of a much larger set of skills called executive functioning which will benefit the children throughout their lives.
Using the estimation jar to check in and practice writing!
We also used a sign up sheet for knights wanting to enter the tournament. This sign in sheet provides an opportunity for meaningful writing!
In preschool we learn from each other! In the writing center this morning some friends taught each other how to draw hearts. In the block center, some of the friends taught each other how to make similar structures. They are learning important leadership skills!
Castle play
Praise God for the commons! We are still able to run and play even in such frigid temperatures.
During morning meeting, we watched a short video of a knight tournament. We observed things that we will need for our tournament! We will make a list of these things and begin creating them in the coming days.
We also played a fun game called Wiggle Worm! This game helps us practice recognizing letters, numbers, and shapes while allowing a chance to wiggle!
During small group time we played a game on the SMARTboard that allowed us to practice recognizing letters and their sounds!
When we webbed what we knew about knights and what we wanted to know about knights, some friends had questions about catapults. We used this student interest to guide our learning! We worked in groups to make small catapults. We will test the catapults later in the week as well as make a large catapult as a class!
We also painted on wax paper!
Before second free choice time, we worked together to plan our play. Planning play increases cognitive development as it helps children to begin to think through processes.
Some friends planned to read books. Although the children cannot read the words on the page, they are learning valuable pre-reading skills such as remembering a story, context clues, and print orientation.
Some of the friends planned to play knight dogs. Knight dogs protect the castle!
Sammie and Zack worked together in the blocks to create an animal cage!
Some of the friends wanted to try to make their own catapults. This was a great opportunity to engage in problem solving, thinking through a process, and helping each other!
Many of the friends chose to work in the writing center. They are engaging in meaningful writing practice and creative thinking skills.
Of course we had a few tournaments too!
Brynne was the news girl for the tournaments. She took notes about what happened! This was another great opportunity to engage in meaningful writing practice as well as strengthen the relationship between spoken word and written print!
Large motor time in the classroom
During Jesus time, we learned the story of the Widow's Mite found in Like 21:1-4. We learned that sometimes we don't want to give our time, talents, and/or money to Jesus. We learned that Jesus gives us the riches of heaven: the best gift ever! Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can willingly give our time, talents, and money to Jesus trusting that we have all that we need!
