What a yummy day we had in preschool today!!

We started the day with free choice as usual.

Some of the friends played birthday party in our new birthday party center.

They looked at pictures of their own birthday parties for inspiration.  This connect what we are learning to their prior experience and helps to assimilate new information.

We decided to make a sign for our birthday party center.  The friends worked to write HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the sign.  This is a great opportunity for meaningful writing practice!

We then headed outside to enjoy the beautiful day!

During small group time we made cakes and cupcakes!  A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Tricia Smith who came to help us bake today.  THANK YOU!! :)

In this activity, the children engaged in early reading skills as they read the pictures of the ingredients needed. We practiced counting and one to one correspondence as we added ingredients and count how many stirs each friend takes.  We engaged in science exploration as we saw the batter turn into cake and cupcakes.  Furthermore, we practice social skills including taking turns and sharing.

Once the batter was made, it was time to take a tour of the kitchen while they cook!  Mrs. B. showed us all around the kitchen.  All the while, the children put their map making skills to work drawing maps of what they saw!

After the tour, we took a few minutes to finish our maps.

Back in the classroom, the cakes were done and ready to be frosted!

Of course we added sprinkles!

We then added candles to our cakes and sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our friends!

Then, the children engaged in free choice play.  They immediately incorporated their new knowledge into their play!

I worked with the friends to label what they drew on their maps.

Yumm!!  Look how good our cakes look!

In the gym, we had fun running and throwing the balls.

During Jesus time, we learned the story of Joseph and his brothers found in Genesis 37:1-11.  We learned that although people in different families are sometimes mean and unkind to each other, Jesus forgives us and our families!
