It's a great day to be in preschool!  :)

Today we practiced writing our names; we practice writing our names almost every day! A name is something that is personal and meaningful to the children. Meaningful writing opportunities help children become skilled and enthusiastic writers.

We were very creative in the blocks today!

As you know, block play lays the foundation for future math learning.

The children built ramps for their cars.  They noticed that when the cars roll down the ramp, they seem to go faster.  We decided that we might have to investigate this further throughout our project!

Brynne and Megan worked together in the dramatic play center.  Learning social skills such as cooperation is a large part of early childhood education as research has documented that children with poor social skills are at risk for difficulties including peer rejection, behavior problems, and poor academic achievement.  (Gillam and Shahar, 2006)

We played outside together.  While we played outside with Mrs. Mudd, I worked one on one with the children with some assessments.  Assessments are an important part of early childhood education; they allow us to see where each child is functioning and how we can best help each child to learn and grow!

Today, we were creative with cups, glue, and tissue paper.

The children were not given a direction, but allowed to explore and create with the materials provided.

In the early childhood years, we provide many opportunities for creative thinking.  Creative thinking is a higher level thinking skill that promotes cognitive development.

The writing center also privdes more opportunities for meaningful and authentic writing!

We explored license plates today!  (Remember our questions from last week about license plates?)

(Bummer!  I forgot to take pictures of us investigating the license plates today.)

We noticed that the license plates had numbers and letters on them.  We practiced recognizing numbers and letters as we read each license plate.

We then made different 'piles' with the license plates.  We made a pile for the ones with a bird, the black ones, the ones with green writing, etc.  The children are sorting by multiple properties.  Sorting is a foundational math skill.

The children who investigated the license plates yesterday noticed other things too.

"I remember that this one says Washington."
"Look at the little numbers on this sticker."
"Why are there those letters at the top?"
"They are all made out of metal even though they are from different states!"

During Jesus time, we learned the story of the Tower of Babel.  We learned that sometimes when we make bad choices, there is a consequence. However, no matter the choice we make or the consequence, we know that God always forgives us!!
