Mark your calendars!  On Friday, October 11th Zion will have our annual trunk or treat.  This is a great fun way for us to gather as a community of Zion, dress up, and eat some candy.  :)  If you have questions about trunk or treat, please let me know.

Today we worked in the writing center. The writing center provides opportunities for meaningful writing experiences.  Meaningful writing opportunities help children become skilled and enthusiastic writers.

We practiced our social skills as we worked together.  In preschool we have so many opportunities to learn social skills.  It is important for children to learn social skills because the absence of positive social interactions in childhood is linked to negative consequences later in life, such as withdrawal, loneliness, depression, and feelings of anxiety. In addition, low acceptance by peers in the early years is a predictor of grade retention, school dropout, and mental health and behavior problems (Ladd 1999).

Megan and Bryson were practicing their letters by reading A-A-Apple.  Attaching each letter to a physical object helps the children learn the sound of the letters.

While we were outside today, we had the perfect opportunity to learn about safe choices.  Many of the friends were playing very rough with each other.  After much discussion with the friends, I made an executive decision that we will no longer allow the friends to play Power Rangers at school.  We discussed how when we play Power Rangers friends get hurt even if we are pretend punching and kicking.

When we came back to the classroom, we worked together to make signs to hang outside to remind us that we do not play Power Rangers at school.

The friends did a great job helping me sound out the letters of the words.  They also each apologized for being rough.  I reminded them that they are forgiven!  "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."  1 John 1:9

We had a great opportunity to investigate mixing colors today.  The children stamped with cups and an egg carton.  They mixed two colors together as they stamped.  We predicted what would happen to the colors!  The children had fun stamping and mixing the paint.

This activity is also a great way to put our social skills into action!  There were only three items to stamp, so the children had to practice sharing, asking for a turn, and being patient with one another.

We also created our own license plate today.  We practiced recognizing numbers and letters as we observed the license plates.  We practiced writing numbers and letters as we created our own license plates!

Drew brought his favorite book in to read to us today!  Thanks Drew!

During Jesus time, we reviewed the story of the Tower of Babel.  We learned that sometimes when we make bad choices, there is a consequence.  One of the friends said, "Yep.  Like no more Power Rangers." We also learned that Jesus forgives us no matter what!  Praise God for the gift of forgiveness!
