Weekly Newsletter December 10-14

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to the Christmas Program tonight!  The children did a fantastic job!  What a blessing to see the church packed to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

This week we will be working on some top secret projects.  You will find out soon enough about them.  ;)  We will continue to open the free choice center.  We will make more top secret items in the free choice center this week!  The children enjoy creating; it is a higher level thinking skill! We will also continue to finish our Christmas trees and nativity mural.
We will also continue to play the memory matching game.  As the children play memory match, they practice memory skills, help brain development, and improved cognition!
We will continue to hunt for that tricky mouse.  We used the mouse to review our shapes and numbers, and this week we will use the mouse to practice recognizing various letters!  We will also play an upper and lower case matching game.  As the children practice their letters, they are developing as readers and writers!
We will make our own advent wreaths this week as well.  We will light the second candle on the wreath-the candle of peace!  During Jesus time this week, we will learn about the wise men visiting Jesus.  We will continue to learn that Jesus was born to save us from our sins.  Jesus loves us so much!
We will continue to practice foundational math skills as we play a Christmas tree ornament game.  Each child will have an ornament with a number on it.  The children will practice one to one correspondence, counting, and number to quantity match as they count out the correct number shown on the ornament.  We will practice patterns again this week too as we complete various Christmas patterns.  Patterning, again, is a foundational math skill.

Looking Ahead:

  • Tuesday, December 11th Chapel at 9:15
  • Wednesday, December 12th P.E.

Each year at Christmas, Zion students and families participate in a project to serve their neighbors near and far. This year, our classroom has chosen to support one of our own Zion families- a former Parents Day Out student, Drew, was diagnosed with cancer in August. We have been praying for Drew since the beginning of the school year and we would like to show that "Zion is family" by supporting this family during this difficult time.

Each class has signed up for items to provide. Our class will be collecting books (coloring, board books, etc.) for Drew. Drew loves the Cars movie and enjoys any books that are related to this movie.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drew's mom said, "We talk about Zion nearly every day, from him asking to go to school to us dreaming of him being there."

She hasn't worked since his diagnosis, and Drew's dad has been working as he can. In addition to welcoming a new baby, their treatment schedule has been pretty intense:

Currently: Drew just started his fifth round of chemo.
December 31: Surgery to remove the tumor
February: Chemo
March: Bone marrow transplant
April: 30 days of radiation (Drew will be sedated each day.)
May: Begin immunotherapy (which requires a week-long stay in the hospital each month for 5 months).

"After that, we hold our breath for 5 years and pray it leaves us alone."

Drew is dealing with a lot of side effects, such as some hearing loss and knee braces. Please pray for healing for Drew and strength for his family.

Let's collect items until the 20th. Thank you for all of your help!!!!!!!!!
