Welcome back!v I hope that you had a fun and relaxing weekend!
Today we all practiced writing our name. Name writing is a great entry point to practice writing skills.
We discussed various shapes in the block center today. We will investigate shapes more throughout the year.
"Do you have a semi-circle to fit in my circle?" Hunter asked Blake.
"No, but i have two triangle ones that can make a semi-circle." Blake replied.
"I'm taking these circle ones," Andrew said.
"Those are like cylinders!" Blake said.
"I need more rectangles," JJ said.
"Put the triangle one on the top!" Jack said.
LEGOS also provide an opportunity to discuss shapes and refine fine motor skills.
Look at that writing practice!
During small group time, we split into partners to work on different jobs.
The first job was sorting letters by the lines-if they were curvy or straight. This activity not only develops sorting skills, but also draws attention to the lines used to make letters which will help us as we learn to write letters. Furthermore, this activity helps letter recognition!
We then painted with watercolors and then put salt on the paper.
We continued working on making our good junk cars too!
Now, I know you might be thinking-
"What in the world is my child learning from making a car out of junk?"
They are learning to use of the knowledge that we have gathered about cars to create a physical representation of a car.
They are engaging in creative thinking skills. I purposefully did not chose pre-made wheels or car bodies for the children to use. They are using creative thinking to turn "good junk" into various car parts. As you know, the more children engage in creative thinking, the more possibilities for cognitive development.
The children are also learning to persist. They might try to make their car one way, and it might not work. They are learning to not give up, but to try again.
Not to mention, creating with good junk is fun!
Lastly, we webbed what we know about cars. We will compare this web to the web we did in the beginning of the project to see how much we have learned.
During Jesus time we learned the story of Moses. We learned that sometimes bad things happen and we don't know what to do. We also learned that God has good plans for us! He gave us salvation through Jesus His Son!
