We started our day working with the magnetic letters. The children worked on recognizing the letters and some children practiced the letter sounds as well. Through this letter exploration, the children are developing as readers!
Andrew worked hard to make his name!
Our spider made his web even bigger in the jar! We enjoyed investigating the web again and hypothesizing about the spider.
"Maybe he is cold."
"Maybe he wants a home."
"Maybe he wants to catch some bugs!"
As they investigate and make observations, the children are exchanging scientific ideas and developing logical thinking.
The children enjoyed decorating the paper spiders this morning too. I listened to the children as they colored, and here are some of the things I heard:
"Spiders have eight legs."
"Spiders have two body parts."
"Spiders are arachnids."
They are really grasping the differences between bugs/insects and spiders!
Leah drew a bug underneath her spider. I asked her how she know that it was a bug.
She replied, "Well, it has wings!" Great job Leah!
We practiced writing in our journals in small groups. The children practiced their letter recognition, fine motor skills, and some children practiced sounding out some words.
We compared the spider's name graph. It looks as though the name "Batman" is in the lead to name our spider! The children helped compare the graph and decide which name had the most votes, which had the least, and if any of the names were equal. They are developing foundational math skills!
During Jesus time, we worked in small groups to build the wall of Jericho.
We put the towers together to make one giant tower! We marched around the tower and blew our horns, and the wall came tumbling down! We remembered that, "With God, I can do ANYTHING!" We also echoed the bible verse, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength."
Philippians 4:13
If you can believe it, we found yet another spider in our classroom! (I am beginning to wonder about our classroom! :) ) We added him to the jar with the other spider. We compared the two spiders and noticed some differences.
"The new spider is brown."
"The new spider doesn't have a web."
"The new spider is smaller"
As the children compare, they are refining their visual discrimination skills and they are practicing classifying.
We had fun decorating and creating on our handprint turkeys! As the children decorate and create they are not only refining their fine motor skills, but they are also expressing creativity!
Look at the bridge Stephanie made! She problem solved and worked hard to create a bridge that would not fall over. Great job Stephanie!
Tommy and Allison worked together to build this castle. They worked hard to ensure that it would not fall over! They practiced working together, problem solving, and creative thinking!
Bella is building the wall of Jericho! She was using her knowledge of the bible story to act it out on her own. Her tower came tumbling down just like the wall of Jericho!
Chase brainstormed a way as to not let the tower fall over. He used his problem solving skills as he put clothespins inside the circles to make them steady.
Tommy could not find the dice in the classroom. He had the idea to use the paper towel tube to help him locate the dice. Very creative Tommy! Encouraging children's ideas allows them to further develop problem solving skills and confidence.
Dominic and Cohen worked together to complete the mosaic. They also problem solved and practiced working together.
