Happy Friday!  We had a great day in school today!

Check out what we did!

We started the day by practicing counting and our body parts.  I gave each child a plastic spider and asked them to put it on a body part and count while the spider jumped on that body part a certain amount of times.  Through this activity, the children are practicing recognizing their body parts, counting, and one to one correspondence!

We went on another spider hunt today!  We brainstormed where to look for spiders based on what we know about their habitats.  Sadly, we did not find a spider or a spider web, but we will continue to look throughout our Project! Through this activity, the children are learning more about the world around them, learning to test their theories, and learning that sometimes things don't work out the way we would like them to.

During the second group's walk, we found a lady bug.  I asked the children if we should feed it to the spider and they voted yes.  We observed the spider, but he had not found the lady bug yet!  The children are learning about the life cycle and taking an active role in their learning through this activity. They brainstormed if the spider would eat the ladybug or not.

"I think the spider will eat the ladybug because it (the spider) ] is hungry."
"The spider won't even find the ladybug in all those leaves!"
"If he doesn't eat the ladybug, he will be hungry all day!"

During Jesus time, we learned the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho.  We practiced marching around a tower that we built, just like we read about in the bible.  We discussed that it was not the marching that knocked down the wall of Jericho, but God's power!  We shouted, "With God I can do ANYTHING!"

We worked together to build in the legos.  The children are learning and practicing positive social skills, conflict resolution, and problem solving as they play in the legos together!  Learning to interact with each other in a positive way is a life long skill!

Emily made a line longer than she is!  She said, "The legos are longer than me!"  Great comparing Emily!

Chase made two different lines.  "This one is longer and this one is shorter!"  Great comparing Chase!

We worked on creating our own webs today!  We discussed how we think spiders make webs as we created.  The children are refining their fine motor skills (the skills used to do smaller tasks such as writing) and expressing creativity.

Many of the children practiced writing in their journals at center time.  As the children write, they are refining their fine motor skills, and learning that print has meaning.  The children enjoy looking back on things they wrote  while ago and seeing how different it is now.

We worked hard to make a list of items needed for the spider's habitat!  As we make the list, we are learning about about the world around us, and exchanging scientific ideas!

We looked at our spider habitat for inspiration for our list!  The children were excited to see the green spider!!

The children noticed that underneath the refrigerator, there is a spider web!  We talked about what color it is, and how the children though it got there.

"It looks white"
"I bet a spider has been hiding there for a while!"
"A spider made a habitat in our room!"

Sadly, the spider that made the web has long since died.  I did pull it out for the children to investigate. As they investigated, the children brainstormed why the spider died.  They exchanged scientific ideas, explored scientific reasoning, and made observations about the spider!
