We had a wonderful day in school!

Check out what we did today!

We started the day by practicing counting and our body parts.  I gave each child a plastic spider and asked them to put it on a body part and count while the spider jumped on that body part a certain amount of times.  Through this activity, the children are practicing recognizing their body parts, counting, and one to one correspondence!

We went on a spider hunt today!  We brainstormed where to look for spiders based on what we know about their habitats.  Sadly, we did not find a spider or a spider web, but we will continue to look tomorrow! Through this activity, the children are learning more about the world around them, learning to test their theories, and learning that sometimes things don't work out the way we would like them to.

During Jesus time, we learned the story of Joshua and the battle of Jericho.  We practiced marching around a tower that we built, just like we read about in the bible.  We discussed that it was not the marching that knocked down the wall of Jericho, but God's power!  We shouted, "With God I can do ANYTHING!"

We enjoyed working together in the legos today!  The children are expressing creativity, practicing fine motor skills, and learning to work together as they play in the legos!

Some of the children made long "keys."  We discussed which was longer and which was shorter.  The children counted to see how many more legos the short "key" needed to be equal with the long "key."  The children practiced one to one correspondence and counting!

The "keys" became really long!

The children decided to move them to another part of the room where they would not be broken. We decided to see if the "keys" were longer than Mrs. Douglas and Mrs. Mudd put together, and the "keys" were longer!  Using non-standard measurements, such as using people to measure, is a foundational math skill!

The children were having difficulty transporting the legos from one side of the room to the other.  I noticed that they began to put the legos in bags to move them.

I asked the children, "Why are you putting them in the bag?"
The children responded: "They don't fall all over the floor!"
"It's easier to carry them to the blocks!"
The children are developing logical thinking and problem solving skills as they saw a problem (difficulty moving the legos) and found a solution to the problem on their own!

We worked on creating our own webs today!  We discussed how we think spiders make webs as we created.  The children are refining their fine motor skills (the skills used to do smaller tasks such as writing) and expressing creativity.

We have not seen the spiders all day!  The children brainstormed why we haven't seen them:
"Maybe they are sleeping?"
"Maybe they are hiding?"
"Maybe they are scared of us?"
"Maybe they died?"
