Happy Monday!
Check out what we did in school today!
Free choice play offers natural and meaningful entries for learning writing skills. Today, Hunter wanted to make his mom a card. This provided a natural and meaningful opportunity to write! "When preschoolers actively use writing, it has meaning in their lives. They should make choices about their writing." (Early Writing Experiences). Sammie, Allison, Bella, and Alma also engaged in writing practice as they wrote in their journals and wrote notes for their families.
As Ethan signed in, he practiced writing his name.
We had a lot of fun playing Jesus in the manger this morning. The children learn more about the story of Jesus birth as they act it out together. They are also learning valuable social skills including sharing, taking turns, and positive conflict resolution.
JJ, Ethan, Andrew, Blake, and Jack exercised their spatial relationship skills as they built this "boom tower." Block play lays the foundation for future math learning.
During morning meeting, I forgot how to write my letters! Oh no! The friends described to me how to write the letters. Providing an opportunity for the children to verbalize how to form the letters is a form of writing practice.
Our stocking word of the day is gift. During Jesus time, we learned that the best gift we have is the gift of salvation from Jesus our Savior!
During small group time, the friends played a mitten match game in which they match upper and lower case letters.
We then each drew a person for our collaborative nativity picture.
The friends worked with me on patterning and ordering objects by size. These are both foundational math skills.
Because it was so cold outside, we took a short walk around the school building.
Mr. Marolf, Zion's Assistant Principal, came and ate lunch with us and read a book to us! What a special treat!
