Zion will be hosting an Open House on Feb. 10th from 1-3 p.m.  This would be a great time to come in and view our Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms and talk to our school staff!  Please invite friends and family who are interested in learning more about the great things that are going on at Zion Lutheran School!

Just a reminder: There is no school Friday, February 15th and Monday, February 18th.

We had a great day in school!

Check out what we did today!

We worked on making a sun catcher out of tissue paper and plastic wrap.  We will use these to decorate our classroom for Valentines Day!

We practiced writing and sounding out words as we wrote in our journals!  The children are learning the sounds of the letter and how to write the letters.  They are developing as readers and writers!

During Jesus time, we learned about how we can show God's love to different people.  We brainstormed ways to show His love.  We discussed how we can help one another!  We thanked God for His love for us that we can share with others!

We watched live feed of penguins this morning and discussed what penguins do during the winter.  The children observed that some of the penguins were tall, like the penguin we measured ourselves by, and some of the penguins were short.  We discussed that just like people, God made the penguins different sizes.  We loved to see them walk and flap their flippers!

We practiced counting, one to one correspondence, and number recognition as we ‘fed’ penguins. I wrote the numbers one to twenty on twenty penguin cards. The children used pon poms to count out the correct number of fish for the penguin on the card.

The children played a game with foam hearts. Mrs. Mudd gave each child a handful of hearts, and they rolled dice together.  The children removed the number of hearts from their pile that is displayed on the dice.  In this activity, the children are again practicing counting and one to one correspondence which are important math skills!

We started making penguins using water bottles, cotton, paper, and google eyes.  The children refined their fine motor skills as they worked to push the cotton in the water bottle and cut out wings, a beak, and feet.  Fine motor skills are important because those are the skills that are so important for writing and doing other small tasks such as zipping up a coat, buttoning, and tying shoes!

We practiced identifying letters and matching upper and lower case as we played a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom letter matching game.  (Thank you Dose family for the fun game!)  The children are not only practicing recognizing letters, they are also helping one another.

When I called out a letter that was not on their card, the children would double check their friends' cards and say, "Oh look (insert name of friend)! I think you have a lower case R."

Learning to work together and help one another are life long social skills!
