Zion will be hosting an Open House on Feb. 10th from 1-3 p.m.  This would be a great time to come in and view our Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms and talk to our school staff!  Please invite friends and family who are interested in learning more about the great things that are going on at Zion Lutheran School!

Just a reminder: There is no school Friday, February 15th and Monday, February 18th.

We had a great day in school!

Check out what we did today!

We enjoyed making masks this morning!  We practiced refining those fine motor skills and engaged in creative thinking as we used paper plates, yarn, scissors, and crayons to create our own masks!

A large part of Early Childhood Education is learning how to work together and use positive social interactions.  Today, the children worked together in the block center.  They resolved conflicts on their own!  They are learning to work together and positive conflict resolution.

Learning how to make and maintain friendships is another large aspect of Early Childhood Education.  The children are daily able to practice learning not only how to make friends, but also how to maintain those friendships!

Some of the children wanted to play hockey in the block center.  One of the friends was concerned about others getting hurt.  We gathered together and made a list of rules that would ensure that no one is hurt during the hockey game.  The children are not only learning self-regulation, but they are also learning that their actions have sometimes negative consequences!

They followed the rules that they made for the game!  I am so proud of them!

During morning meeting, we investigated penguins as we watched live feed of penguins.  We observed how they walk, how they swim, and how they eat.  We discussed if they hibernate or not.  We learned that penguins do not hibernate.

Arianna brought one of our favorite books in to read on CD-Skippyjon Jones and the Dog House!  We love how funny SKippyjon Jones is.  Learning to love books and reading is an early reading skill!

We worked on making a sun catcher out of tissue paper and plastic wrap.  We will use these to decorate our classroom for Valentines Day!

We had fun graphing gummy bears too! (We did not eat any of the gummy bears.  The children who worked on their gummy bear graph took their gummy bears home today.  If you child did not take gummy bears home today, he/she will do so on the next day he/she comes to school.) The children sorted their gummy bears by color and graph each bear.  Again, this activity allows the children to practice one to one correspondence, visual discrimination as they sort, and comparing as they check to see which color bear has the most and which has the least.

We also practiced recognizing numbers as I called out a number, and the children used a marker to fill in the dot containing that number.  The children did a great job working together to help each other when needed.  They showed God's love to each other!

We also stamped with cookie cutters.  We will use these heart stamped hearts to decorate our classroom!

We practiced counting, one to one correspondence, and number recognition as we ‘fed’ penguins. I wrote the numbers one to twenty on twenty penguin cards. The children used goldfish to count out the correct number of fish for the penguin on the card

We also measured to see if we are taller than a penguin or not!  The children are learning to use non-standard units of measurement in this activity.  Each child predicted whether or not he/she would be taller than the penguin.  We graphed the predictions and results! We are learning how to compare as we look at the graph and see if more friends think they will be taller or more friends think that they will be shorter.  We also recorded our heights with tape on the penguin.
