Zion will be hosting an Open House on Feb. 10th from 1-3 p.m.  This would be a great time to come in and view our Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms and talk to our school staff!  Please invite friends and family who are interested in learning more about the great things that are going on at Zion Lutheran School!

Just a reminder: There is no school Friday, February 15th and Monday, February 18th.

We had a great day in school!

Check out what we did today!

We enjoyed making masks this morning!  We practiced refining those fine motor skills and engaged in creative thinking as we used paper plates, yarn, scissors, and crayons to create our own maska!

As we were making our masks, we had a discussion about whether tigers hibernate or not.  The conversation sounded like this:
Mrs. Douglas: "What do you think tigers do in the winter?"
Friend 1: "I think they hibernate because they live at the zoo."
Friend 2: "No.  I think they adapt because a tiger is a cat and cats adapt."

The conversation continued, and we looked up the information on the internet.  We found out that tigers do not hibernate in the winter, just like cats do not hibernate in the winter.  Near the end of the conversation, "Friend 2" said, "I change my mind.  They must just adapt in the winter. They are cats after all!"

The children are assimilating their current knowledge with new information that we are learning!

During morning meeting, we had a similar discussion about polar bears. The children, by themselves, came to the conclusion that polar bears are short sleepers because polar bears are bears and bears are short sleepers.

During Jesus time, we read a story about the Good Samaritan   We learned that he showed God's love even when no one else did.  We discussed ways we can show God's love even when others are not.  We thanked God for His love for us!

We played a polar animal roll and graph game.  This activity allows the children to practice one to one correspondence, visual discrimination as they match the animal on the dice to the animal on the graph, and comparing as they check to see which animal we rolled the most and which we rolled the least.

We worked on decorating our Valentine's Day bags!  We will hand out Valentine's in our classroom on the days of our parties.  (Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th)  The children refined their fine motor skills and engaged in creative thinking as they decorated their bags!

If you decide to hand out Valentine's day cards, please bring enough for everyone in the entire class.  We have twenty students in the class.   Please have your child write his/her name in the "From" section.  On the "To" section, please write "a friend", that makes it much easier to pass them out when they are not assigned to a certain friend! :) If you would like, you can include a small sticker, eraser, etc. to the valentine- although this is not necessary.

We made yummy polar bears out of marshmallows and toothpicks. We learned that when you lick the marshmallows, they will stick together really well.  The children practiced creative thinking and expressing themselves. I think the best part for the children was when they were able to eat the marshmallow polar bear at the end!  :)
