I hope everyone had a fun and safe surprise long weekend!

A few reminders:
Grandparents' Day is Thursday, March 7th.  You should have received an e-mail with information about Grandparents' Day.  You will also receive the information as a hard copy in your child's cubby.  Please return the form at the end of the information packet by Friday, March 1st so we know how many to prepare for.  Thank you so much!

Friday, March 8th we have early dismissal at 12:00.  There is no school lunch program on this day, so please pack you child a sack lunch.  Thanks!

We had a lot of fun today exploring maps!  Check out what we did!

We explored maps as we played with cars on our classroom rug.  We discussed that our rug might need some safety signs to be sure that all the cars are safe.  We discussed the different kinds of safety signs that we could use.  We decided to make safety signs for our map rug.  We will work on the signs at the end of the week!  Thinking through consequences of actions can help children learn self-regulation.

We made ramps for the cars to see how far they would go. The children made predictions about which cars would go the farthest, and they tested their predictions.  As the children ask questions and explore the answers to their questions, they are learning skills that can help to foster the love of learning!

We explored new maps at morning meeting.  We discussed how we could use the new maps as we explore and learn about maps.  Engaging children in discussion and allowing them to express their ideas and feelings in a positive environment allows children the opportunity to learn confidence.

We went to Mrs. Smith's room and learned how maps and globes are similar and different.  We discussed that a globe might not be the best thing to use on a trip because it takes up so much room, but a map can fold and put in your pocket. (We also discussed how maps can be on a phone and GPS to help us with directions!)  Mrs. Smith cut the globe to show us that a globe is just a round map of the world! Working with another class allows the children another opportunity to learn and practice collaboration!

We then practiced our songs for Grandparents' Day together!

We had fun painting with yarn today!  The children exercised their fine motor skills and expressed creativity. The paintings turned out great!

Some of the children worked together to create a collaborative map of our classroom!  The children practiced symbolic representation as they drew pictures of different classroom items and areas.

We discussed various emotions, and positive things we can do if we are sad, angry, or upset. Discussing various emotions and role playing how to handle them can help the children learn to regulate their own emotions.  Self-regulation is a skill that will benefit the children throughout their lives! We worked to make a classroom emotions chart (our chart will replace the chart pictured below) which we will display in our room.  This will be able to help us learn to manage our emotions when we do feel sad, angry, or upset.  Below is a sneak peek of the pictures we will use on our chart!
