What a beautiful day!

A couple of things:

Donuts for dad is Wednesday, January 16th from 7:00-7:45 in the church basement.  Come and enjoy donuts and fellowship! Dads are also invited to stay for chapel which will start at 8:10 in the sanctuary.

Re-enrollment packets for preschool went home today and yesterday.  They should be in your child's folder.  If you did not receive one, please let me know and I will be sure that your packet is sent home. If you have any questions about the preschool or kindergarten program, please feel free to e-mail me.

Zion will also be hosting an Open House on Feb. 10th from 1-3 p.m.  This would be a great time to come in and view our Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms and talk to our school staff!  Please invite friends and family who are interested in learning more about the great things that are going on at Zion Lutheran School!

Preschool programs fill up fast, so please don't delay in filling out the paperwork, especially if you want certain days!  We will open up registration to the community on Feb. 1st.

Wednesday, January 9th and Wednesday, January 16th we will be worshiping with grades 1-8 for chapel.  PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 8:05 ON THOSE DAYS. THANK YOU!

We had a great day in school today!

Check out what we did!

We again started the day by writing our names on the sign in sheet.  The children are doing a great job waiting for their turn, sharing the space, and helping one another.  They are learning valuable social skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

We continued using our weather person today!  Abby stuck her hand outside to check the weather for us.  As the children use weather words to describe the weather, they are learning foundational science/discovery skills.

We practiced sorting letters and numbers with a mitten game.  The children worked together to decide whether the mitten had a letter written on it or a number.  It was so fun to see how they worked as a team!

We worked with the balance today.  The children estimated how many of one animal it would take to equal another animal.  Estimating, counting, and one to one correspondence are all foundational math skills!

The children worked together to build towers and structures out of plastic cups.  They were very creative, and they worked together very well.  Again, the children are learning valuable life long social skills.

During Jesus time, we learned about prayer.  We learned that Jesus always listens when we pray, and He always answers our prayers!  We sang the song, "All You Have to Do is Pray" by AriSon.  The song reminds us that if we are scared, sad, or lonely all we have to do is pray to God!

We also had our daily estimation jar today!  The children estimate how many items are in the jar, and write their name and estimation on a piece of paper.  At the end of the day, we count the items in the jar.  This activity helps the children practice math skills such as estimation, counting, and one to one correspondence.

I worked one on one with the children to complete our mid-year assessments.  These assessments help me to know what your child knows, and what areas to focus on while in the classroom.  Skills assessed are not expected to be mastered; this gives a great resource of information for your child's individual strengths and areas for growth.  It is exciting to see how your children have learned!

We enjoyed the new puppet theater in our classroom.  Of course, since it was a new thing in the room, all of the children wanted to play at the same time.  We brainstormed and decided the best decision was to have the children sign up on a sheet.  We also decided that the puppet theater only has room for two children.  We set an alarm and when it would ring, we knew it was time to switch people in the theater.

Problem solving in this way engages the children and teaches them how to resolve issues of concern in a positive way.  The children are also  learning life long social skills such as listening to the thoughts and opinions of others, participating in a small group, and engaging in conversation to express their own ideas.

The children became creative in the art center.  As you know by now, creativity is a higher level thinking skill.  Engaging in creative thinking allows for more cognitive development.
