Welcome back to school!  I pray that you had a restful and blessed Christmas break!

PLEASE NOTE: Wednesday, January 9th and Wednesday, January 16th we will be worshiping with grades 1-8 for chapel.  PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 8:05 ON THOSE DAYS.  THANK YOU!

We had a great day!  Check out that we did today!

We started the day with our new check in routine.  Each child practiced writing his/her name.  Most of the children even practiced writing their last name too! We are really working those fine motor skills.

We sorted our new animal manipulaitves by color, shape, and size! Sorting by various properties is also a foundational math skill.

We also sorted the bears by color and size!  We also made patterns with them.  Both sorting and parretning are again foundational math skills!

During morning meeting, the children were asking many questions about snow.  We decided to web our questions and to investigate the answers.

We collected some snow from outside, and we explored it in small groups.  We made observations about the snow and described how it felt.  Making observations and asking questions about the world is a foundational science skill!

We predicted whether the snow would melt during center time or during rest time.  Predicting is also a foundational science skill!  We graphed our predictions and discussed which line had more and which had less.

During Jesus time, we learned about prayer.  We learned that Jesus always listens when we pray, and He always answers our prayers!  We sang the song, "All You Have to Do is Pray" by AriSon.  The song reminds us that if we are scared, sad, or lonely all we have to do is pray to God!

We checked on the snow quite often during center time to see if it had all melted.  We also worked on our estimation jar! Every day, your children will have the opportunity to practice math skills as they estimate how many items are in the jar.  The children each practiced writing their names and their estimation.  At the end of the day, we practiced counting and one to one correspondence as we counted to see how many items were actually in the jar.

I worked one on one with the children to complete our mid-year assessments.  These assessments help me to know what your child knows, and what areas to focus on while in the classroom.  Skills assessed are not expected to be mastered; this gives a great resource of information for your child's individual strengths and areas for growth.  It is exciting to see how your children have learned!

At the end of center time we noticed that all the snow had melted.  We discussed the things we saw in the water.  We also discussed that because of the things hidden in the snow, we do not wat snow on the ground.
