Zion will also be hosting an Open House on Feb. 10th from 1-3 p.m.  This would be a great time to come in and view our Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms and talk to our school staff!  Please invite friends and family who are interested in learning more about the great things that are going on at Zion Lutheran School!

We had a fun day of school today!

Check out what we did!

We started the day by reading the story And Bear Snores On.  We discussed how bears are not true hibernators  but they are 'short sleepers.'  The children are learning more about the world around them!

As we were reading the book, the children and I discussed how the bear stays warm in the cold weather.  The children discussed that the bear's fur helps him to stay warm.  We also discussed that his fat helps him to stay warm.  The children were able to experience what the bear's fat feels like in cold weather during center time.  (Pictures below.)  The children are learning to ask questions, predict answers, and test their predictions.

We also sang, Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See to review all of the animals that we have learned so far and their winter habits.
Here is an example:
"Leah, Leah what do you see?"
"I see an adapting cat by me."
This is a great way to re-enforce all we have learned so far about animals in the winter.  You can sing this at home with your child too!

Dominic made a polar bear in his cave.  He used his knowledge about bears to create his own representation of a bear in a cave.  Great job Dominic!

Speaking of caves, we worked on our individual caves today too.  The children will use these caves along with the representations of the animals that we have learned about to re-enforce what we have learned about what animals do in the winter.

Here are the pictures of us experiencing how the animal fat keeps animals warm in the winter.  We used crisco to simulate the animal's fat.  Through this experiment, the children are learning more about the world around them in a hands on way.  Providing children with hands on learning experiences allows for more information retention and it is fun!

We discussed how we should behave in our classroom hibernation cave.  Our discussion sounded a lot like this:
"If animals are sleeping in the cave, how should we behave when we are in the cave?"
"We should probably be quiet."
"Yeah, if we were loud, we might wake the bear and that would not be good!"

We decided to make a sign reminding us of our behavior in the cave.  Allowing the children to think through consequences of their actions helps children to learn self-regulation.  Self-regulation is an important skill for children to learn because it allows them to manage their emotions and choices.

It is hard to see, but it says,
 "Hibernation Cave
Please be quiet."

We continued to create representations of the animals that we have learned about so far.  This not only allows the children to create an accurate representation, but it also provides an opportunity to discuss all we have learned so far!

We explored the wood pieces again today.  As the children create and explore the wood pieces they are learning valuable writing skills.  They are learning that all letters and shapes are made up of different kinds of lines.  Breaking down writing into different lines makes learning to write more manageable for children.
As they created, the children discussed the size and shapes of the wood pieces.
"I am using two small curves."
"I am using one big curve and one straight line."

Here we are wearing our Zion Bobcat gear.  We are thankful for such a wonderful school where we can learn about God every day!!

Happy rainy Wednesday!

Check out what we did today!

As always, we began our day with the estimation jar.  Each child estimates how many items are in the jar, and writes his/her name and estimation.  The children are learning valuable math and writing skills!

We enjoyed pretending to be various animals that hibernate in our hibernation cave!  As the children engage in pretend play, they are not only learning valuable social skills, but they are also using information to make sense of the world around them.

Many friends put on a puppet show for us.  The children pretended to be animals that did not want to hibernate.  This play is a great example of how children use their own pretend play to help assimilate information they have learned and make sense of the world around them.

We had a fun time running and playing games together in the gym!  The children are learning how to follow rules to games, work together, and they are refining their physical coordination!

After gym, we went to chapel.  Mrs. Kuhlmann talked with us about how we can shine God's love to others.  We discussed sharing toys, being nice, and following directions.  This is a conversation you can continue at home too!

Back in the classroom, we discussed bears.  We learned that bears do not truly hibernate, but they do what we call 'short sleep.'  We sang the song, "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?" As we sang the song, we reviewed what various animals do during the winter.  For example we sang:
"Brown Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?"
"I see an adapting cat by me."
"I see a migrating bird by me."

After we sang it together for a few times, each child was able to sing about an animal and what that animal does in winter.  This is a great way to re-visit and review all we have learned so far!

We made bears for our own cave, and we also made bears for the big classroom cave.   We discussed what the bear looks like, how many legs the bear has, and how we can draw the bear.  The children are learning to create accurate representation!

Some of the children have asked how the animals stay warm in the winter.  We discussed that the animal's fur helps them to stay warm, but also their fat.  Bears eat a lot of food before going into 'short sleep.'  The children had questions about how fat is able to keep an animal warm.  We were able to simulate the animal fat today using crisco.  Each child put his/her hand in icy water and discussed the temperature of the water.  Then, each child put on the 'animal fat' and placed his/her hand in the icy water once again.  With the animal fat on, the children could hardly feel the cold water!  We discussed that is how the animal's fat keeps them warm in the winter.

Through this activity, the children are learning how to find answers to their questions.  They are taking an active role in their learning which in turn can help them to foster the love of learning.

We went to our "studio" today and started recoding Sleep, Big Bear, Sleep.  We learned that we need to be really quiet unless it is our turn to say something.  We listened to each recording together and decided if it was good or if we should re-record it.  The children and I worked together to edit the recording until it was just to our liking.  The children are learning to critique their own work, and they are also learning about technology!

We played the recording back in the classroom and acted it out together.  The children are learning expressive skills as well as listening skills!
