It's a great day to be a preschooler!

Free choice play is such a valuable time in our day.  During free choice play, children not only develop social skills such as emotional regulation, cooperation, and conflict resolution, but they also develop cognitive skills including a working memory, inner language, and the ability
to organize, focus, plan, strategize, prioritize, initiate, and perform other skills that
determine later success in school. (Play: An Important Tool for Cognitive Development).

The position of the American Academy of Pediatrics,
says that “play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive,
physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth” (Ginsburg, January
2007, p. 182)

Today we developed measuring skills through our play!

Andrew used the level to see how long he building was.  After moving the level long the building and counting each move, he decided that his building was twelve levels long.  He is not only developing measuring skills but also other foundational math skills such as one to one correspondence and counting!

Brynne and Jacob used the yard stick to measure their structures.  They identified the number on the yard stick that was equal to their structure.  They are not only developing measuring skills but also number recognition!

Breaking News!  This just in!  Our friends love to play in the News Station!

Hunter told his friends today, "When we play in the news station we should say, 'BREAKING NEWS!' That's what I heard on TV."  Through his play, Hunter is making connections and understanding more about the world around him!

Our friends had a long discussion about where to find St. Louis on the map in the weather area.  Each friend hypothesized where to find St. Louis

I then showed the friends where to find St. Louis.  One friend said, "How will we remember it's there?"  Another friend said, "Maybe we should make a mark on it so we can remember!"
So we did.

Allison requested a dance party this morning.  She said, "I think we should play some music because we all really love to dance."  :)  It is true!  Our class loves to dance!

Look at the long road Bryson worked so hard to build this morning!  He showed God's love by sharing his road with other friends!

During morning meeting we hypothesized what we think clouds do and why.

During small group time we made our own clouds with shaving cream and water.  We made the clouds rain and snow by adding food coloring to the clouds.

We made observations about the clouds as we watched the color drip into the water.  We noticed that the cloud did not fall down.  We then looked out the window to notice that the clouds in the sky don't fall down even though rain and snow do fall down from the clouds.

We asked questions about clouds after we made observations.
"Why don't the clouds fall down?"
"How can the clouds do different things (rain, snow, etc.)?"

We will use these questions to help guide our learning throughout the Weather Project.

Encouraging children's curiosity and providing an opportunity to take an active role in the learning process helps to foster the love of learning!

We also explored tangrams during small groups!

We practiced positional words with Mrs. Buchholz.  We each had a 'cloud' and practiced positional words with the cloud!

We danced too!

Indoor recess fun!

Look who came to visit today!  Our friend Drew!  We were all so excited to see Drew and give him the many cards and pictures we made for him!  Thank you for the yummy Oreos Drew!!

During Jesus time our friend Zippy the puppet came to visit.  He was sad because his grandpa died and Jesus did not raise his grandpa from the dead like Jairus' daughter.  We learned that Zippy's grandpa has an even greater gift than rising from the dead.  Because of Jesus death and resurrection, Zippy's grandpa and everyone who knows Jesus is the Savior has life forever in heaven with Jesus!
