During free choice play this morning many friends chose to play meteorologist!  Listen to this conversation that occurred during our play.

(A child picks up the phone) "What?! There is a storm coming on the way?! Let me check my computer."  (Types on keyboard) "You are right! I better go warn the people!"

We love magna tiles!  Not only are the children learning valuable foundational math skills and vocabulary, they are also practicing their social skills as they take turns, share, and resolve their conflicts in a positive way.

Dramatic play is a large part of early childhood education.  Dramatic play helps children to make sense of the world by connecting their experiences through their play.  A favorite game today was "Frozen Heart."  Some of the friends collapsed from a frozen heart, and another friend came to save the day.  :)  This game might have been inspired by the movie Frozen, and is a perfect example how children use their play to make sense of things they have learned and experienced.

Today we attempted an experiment to see what would be colder after some time outside: a piece of paper or a metal spoon.  The friends made their predictions and explained why they predicted the paper or spoon.  When we checked the paper and spoon at the end of small group time, we were sad to see that our paper blew away.  However, this opened up a great opportunity to learn how sometimes science experiments do not go as we planned.  We decided that we will try another day.

Preschool teachers are often asked, "How do you meet the needs of the children in your class with such a wide age range?"

Small group time is one way we differentiate the activities for each child.  Therefore, small group time an extremely valuable time in our day.

For example, today in small group time we made a label for out five day weather forecast that we will use in our dramatic play.

Writing success for children is different for each child.

For example, writing success for children in our class includes:

  •  using the hand over hand technique which allows the children to feel correct pressure, pencil grip, and letter formation
  • writing the letter by copying pre-written letters
  •  writing letters by listening to the letter name
  • sounding out the letters of the word and then writing the letters

During small group time we also explored what would happen when mixing corn starch and water!

We used forks to create with paint!

Of course we danced too!

We have faith that someday we will be able to go outside again!  Until then, we have a lot of fun during indoor recess.

Because of the extremely cold temperatures we did not go to chapel this morning.  We did have Jesus time in our classroom.  During Jesus time we learned that God is everywhere, and He always hears our prayers-even the ones we don't say out loud!
