We had a fabulous day in preschool today!  Check out what we did!

We started the day investigating and experimenting with the balance. The children worked together and practiced their problem solving skills as they worked to balance the two cups.

We did a lot of puzzles this morning!  Through puzzles, children learn problem solving skills and spatial relationships. Learning about spatial relationships boosts understanding of numbers.

We are continuing to develop friendships with one another!

We worked on our emotions poster.  We practiced making faces to help us identify various emotions.  We will use these pictures to make an emotions chart in our classroom.  (If you do not see your child's emotion picture in today's blog, it will be in tomorrows blog.)

We focus on feelings in early childhood because learning about feelings can help children identify and express their emotions in a more positive way.  In addition, learning about feelings can help children respond to other's emotions appropriately.  When children can identify other's emotions and respond in an appropriate way, they are able to show God's love!

We then discussed our names.  We brainstormed to see who might have the most letters in their names.  We wondered how we could see who had the most letters in their name. Our discussion sounded like this:
Student: "We could count the letters in the name!"
Mrs.Douglas: "We could, but I might have a hard time remembering how many letters are in each friend's name.  We have so many friends!"

I then showed the children a graph.  We discussed how a graph could help us see who has the most letters in their name.  (We discussed that no matter how many letters in our names, Jesus loves us all the same!)

We then practiced writing our names, and counted how many letters we wrote.

Then, we looked for the letters in our name!  Some of our friends had a difficult time finding some of the letters.  The children did a great job helping one another!  They not only practiced letter recognition, and/or recognizing the different lines that make the letters, but they also practiced showing God's love!

We then put each letter on the graph with sticky tac.  We compared the names on the graph and saw whose name was the longest and whose was the shortest.  (We again discussed that God loves us the same no matter how many letters in our name.  :) )

I thought our graph was done at this point, but as we were looking at the graph a few of the friends said that they wanted to write their name on the graph.

"I want to write my name because it's mine."
"I know the letters in my name."
"I can write my name by myself."

We then took off the letters with sticky tac, and the children wrote their own names.  Encouraging children's ideas not only boosts their self-confidence, but it engages them in their learning and creates a meaningful learning experience.

We then read a silly book about a girl with a very long name.  We decided her name might take up the whole graph!

During Jesus time we learned that God gave us a special name when we were baptized- His children!  Because we are His children, we will one day be in heaven with Him!

We remembered our baptisms by making the sign of the cross on our foreheads and on our hearts.  We sang, "Jesus Calls My by My Name" to help remind us that Jesus not only knows our name, but He gave us a special name at baptism!
