Check out some of the highlights from our day!

We started our day by going to the BIG PLAYGROUND to play before it rained!  What fun!! We were on the playground with Mrs. Smith's class too.  This was a great time for the children to not only develop their large motor skills, but also to develop relationships with children who are not in our class.

We came back to the classroom just in time before it started to rain!  Once the rain stopped, we went outside in small groups to look for worms to put in the worm habitat that we were making.

As we were digging outside, the children discovered many things.

First, we discovered that the deeper we dug, the wetter the dirt is.   I asked the children why they thought the dirt was this way.  Here are some of the responses:
"The sun can't get down that far."
"It just rained, so the ground is still wet down there."

We also discovered that the ground was the easiest to dig in if it was squishy!  The children used their feet to check the ground to see if it would be easy to dig in or not.  If one child found a squishy spot, he/she would shout, "I found a good spot!"  The children would then come running to dig there.

Allowing children to explore and learn through hands on experiences provides an opportunity for children to not only to assimiliate that information to what they already know,  but also retain new information learned.

Sadly, we did not find any worms this morning.  We hope to find some tomorrow after some more rain!

While inside, we worked on making our worm habitat.  We layered sand, dirt, and oatmeal for the worms.

We finished our butterflies today too! As the children twist the pipe cleaners, they are refining their fine motor skills!

The students chose a color and drew pictures based on how the various sections of music made them feel.  This activity provides children an opportunity to listen and respond to different musical styles.  Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for children to discuss their emotions and understand other’s emotions.  Understanding other’s emotions helps children communicate with others and is a valuable social skill!
