This morning, some of the friends were independently collecting information and graphing it in their journals.  We decided that this would be a good thing to expand upon during small group time!  Allowing the students' interest to guide learning helps children engage in the learning, and therefore makes it more meaningful.

Cooperation is a social skill that we work on in preschool.  It is important for children to learn how to work together and resolve conflicts in a positive way!

Brr!! It is a cold day!  We are so thankful for the space in the commons to run and play on cold days!

During morning meeting, we increased our phonemic awareness!  Phonemic awareness is an integral aspect of beginning reading.  Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to play with the sounds of language.  (Rhyming, clapping out words, etc.) Today we practiced "clapping out" various words.  When we clap out the words, we are learning to chop words into syllables.  Again, this is an important pre-reading concept.  You can clap out words with your child at home too!

We had a blast reading the book entitled Press Here!
The children were able to actively participate in this book by pressing the dots in the book.  When the children pressed the dots and turned the page, the dots changed!

During small group time, we created an art piece modeled after the Press Here book.

We also played the upper and lower case Go Fish game independently!

We then capitalized on the graphing interest from this morning by each identifying a question to ask and collecting the responses.  Graphs help children learn how to visually organize collected information.

The children then recorded the responses to their question.

During second free choice time, the children again practiced working together and cooperation.  Free choice time is an important part of our day.  During free choice time, children explore curiosity and creativity- both of which impact children's intrinsic motivation to learn. Furthermore, children engage in and practice self-regulation (the ability to regulate one's desires and make good choices) through free choice play.

During Jesus time, we learned the story of Jesus teaching in the temple found in Luke 2:41-52.  We learned that sometimes we don't want to study God's word.  However, the bible is God's word and give us knowledge of salvation, telling us that Jesus is our Savior!  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can grow in our desire to learn about Jesus!
