Looking Ahead:

Friday, March 15th is Spirit Day! Wear red and black to show your Bobcat spirit!

Thursday, March 28th school will dismiss at 12:00.  Please pack your child a sack lunch on this day as there is no school lunch program, but we will still eat lunch before the end of the day.

There is no school March 29th-April 5th for Easter Break. We will return to school on Monday, April 8th.

We had a great day in school today!  Check out what we did!

We enjoyed exploring the beans in the sensory table!  We used the scoops and measuring spoons to count to see how many scoops it would take to fill up the tub we put in the table.  Through this child-initiated activity, the children explored estimation as they estimated how many scoops took. They also practiced counting as we counted each scoop we put in the bucket.  Counting and estimating are both foundational math skills!

We continued to explore road maps in the new block center.  We used the safety signs to help ensure that the cars in the block center were safe.  We also expressed creativity as we built and created with the blocks and LEGOS.

We then headed to the gym to play and run!  We are thankful that we were able to run and play both in the gym and outside today!  Large motor development (running, skipping, hopping, etc.) is extremely important!

We completed our graph of what we should build with our cardboard boxes, and each child had a turn to vote and write his/her name in the structure that he/she would like to build.  Through this activity, the children are learning to use the graph to evaluate information.

We observed that the votes between 'A Big City' and 'A House' were equal.  We decided that Mrs. Douglas' vote should make the graph have one more vote, making the two columns un-equal.  We are excited to start building 'A Big City' in our classroom!

We made a list of buildings and things we needed to create in the big city.  We then drew a map of how our big city should look.  The children are learning to create accurate representations; as they create, they are also working their fine motor skills, which as you know, are the skills needed to do smaller tasks such as writing and tying shoes.

As we drew pictures on our map, we discussed the shapes of the things we were drawing.  The children noticed that most of the buildings were made by either drawing a square or a rectangle.  One student noticed that when you add a triangle on top of a square, it looks like a house!  The children are recognizing shapes everywhere!

Here is a picture of our completed map of our city.  You will notice it is quite ambitious, so we will continue to collect large cardboard boxes!  We will also begin collecting packing tape duct tape.  :)

The children LOVE the new writing center!  As the children write in the writing center, they are surrounded by words and numbers to practice writing.  They are able to practice writing their name, their friends' names, or even practice developing their fine motor skills by coloring and drawing!

We again practiced recognizing shapes as we used classroom items to 'fill up' laminated shapes on the floor.  We estimated which shapes would take more items to fill up and which shapes would take less.  We discussed the sides of the shapes and if they were straight or curvy.  The children are investigating and discussing the characteristics of shapes which is a valuable math skill! They also decided to re-create other shapes using classroom items.  This, again, is a foundational math skill!
